Whether you're bidding a highrise, a bridge project, or a wind turbine install, you need accurate crane rental rates to build a competitive estimate. Here's what the market looks like in 2026 — broken down by crane type, capacity, and rental period.

Crane Rental Rates by Type (2026 US Market)

Tower (Luffing Jib)6-12 ton tipN/AN/A$30,000-$75,000

Rough Terrain30-60 ton$175-$350$1,400-$2,800$18,000-$35,000

Note: These rates typically include the bare crane only. Operator, fuel, rigging, mobilization, and insurance are additional — and can double the effective cost.

What's Included (and Not Included) in Rental Rates

Usually included:

  • Crane itself with standard configuration
  • Basic maintenance during rental period
  • Technical support from the rental company

Usually NOT included (you pay separately):

  • Operator: $55-$90/hour fully loaded (union rates higher)
  • Oiler/rigger: $35-$55/hour fully loaded
  • Fuel: 8-50 gallons/hour depending on crane size at $4-$5/gallon
  • Mobilization: $2,000-$50,000 per move (crawler cranes are the most expensive)
  • Insurance: Usually required — 1-3% of crane value for the rental period
  • Permits: Street closure, over-dimensional transport: $500-$5,000

Factors That Affect Rates

1. Geography

Rates in major metros (NYC, SF, Chicago) run 20-40% higher than rural areas due to union labor, permitting, and logistics. Gulf Coast rates spike during hurricane recovery seasons. Western states are generally cheaper than the Northeast.

2. Seasonality

Spring and summer are peak construction seasons — rates can jump 10-20% from March to September. Winter months offer the best deals, especially in northern states where outdoor work slows.

3. Rental Duration

Monthly rates offer the best per-day value. A crane that costs $2,000/day will typically rent for $30,000-$35,000/month (17-18 equivalent days). For projects lasting 3+ months, negotiate a long-term rate — 5-15% discount is standard.

4. Market Availability

When infrastructure spending is high (like post-IIJA in 2025-2026), available fleet tightens and rates increase. If you need a specific crane type (400+ ton crawler, luffing jib tower crane), book 2-3 months ahead — these are scarce.

True Cost: Rate + Extras

Here's what a "typical" month actually costs for a 100-ton mobile crane:

Line ItemMonthly Cost
Bare rental$35,000
Operator (176 hrs × $65)$11,440
Fuel (20 gal/hr × $4.50 × 120 hrs)$10,800
Insurance$1,500
Total monthly cost$58,740
Effective hourly rate (at 120 working hours)$490/hr

That $300/hour "rental rate" becomes $490/hour when you add everything up. This is the number that should go in your project estimate — not the bare rate.

How to Get Better Rates

  1. Get 3+ quotes: National companies (ALL, Maxim, Bigge) and local fleets price differently
  2. Book early: 4-8 weeks ahead for standard cranes, 8-12 weeks for specialty
  3. Bundle: Rent the crane with operator from the same company — often 5-10% cheaper than sourcing separately
  4. Negotiate standby rates: For days the crane is on-site but not lifting, negotiate a 50% standby rate
  5. Consider time of year: December-February rentals can be 10-20% cheaper
